CREATING WAVES WITH NICHOLAS ST JOHN ROSSE

In this course we aim to get our creative juices going, using memory and judgement and allowing our materials to do some of the work and come up with unforeseen effects – the happy accident. Wave shape and perspective will be discussed and we will start with some drawing. For this I recommend a simple A4 children’s white drawing pad, one or two darkish colours in Derwent Coloured Charcoal pencils and a soft rubber. You could also have grey tinted paper with the same pencils and a white pastel. The emphasis in these drawings will be on finding good wave shapes, which we will then go on to repeat in our paintings. Colour will be important at this stage. We will be painting from our drawings and from imagination.

I know that working without reference is a challenge so if you feel photographs will give you confidence then bring some along and I will do the same. Also, we can discuss how they relate to our creations.

Oil or acrylic. Usual colours, Alkyd white if possible. Boards or canvas no bigger than 12”x16”. A good flexible palette knife in addition to brushes.
